The team made a promising start to the season winning all three games in this round robin tournament and improving with every match. Shiplake College were our first opponents and were dispatched 25-0, Sam Lindsey-Halls and Jaime Palazares running in 2 tries apiece in addition to Kalil Orange ‘s try.
Ewell Castle proved sterner opponents; Sam Lindsey-Halls gave us the lead and Ben Nathan followed up with another before we conceded our first score. Sam scored again, but the opponents kept coming and we did well to hold out for a 15-10 victory after some sloppy tackling.
Our final match against the hosts Epsom College was notable for the emphatic reversal of this aspect of our game. Jaime opened the scoring which stung Epsom into a furious onslaught. They broke the line only twice but were thwarted once by an exquisite tap tackle by Ollie-Bob Ingram and once by a determined cover tackle by Alfie Agar, chasing down his quarry over 40 yards before bundling him into touch. James Isbell capped a fine set of performances by scoring the final try of the match to win 10-0 after some deft hands opened up the try line for him. This final clean sheet, apt reward for the team’s commitment and refusal to be cowed in the closer exchanges was the jewel in the crown of a fine performance. The standard has been set....
