Venue: Away

St George’s Weybridge 15 - 26 RBC

Tries: Leftley, Dance (2), Malaperiman

Conversions: Dance (3)

The 16As gained a hard fought victory against a well organised St George’s team. The match ebbed and flowed, with St George’s enjoying the balance of possession and territory throughout the game. Blue Coat’s defensive play within their own 22 was outstanding for the entire 60 minutes. RBC took the lead after 20 minutes, against the run of play, and we managed to hold onto a 7-5 lead at half time. Jack Leftley was the try scorer and Lucas Dance converted.

Blue Coat extended their lead early in the second half, a Lucas Dance try made the score 14-5. The lead was maintained until St George’s finally broke the defensive line with 10 minutes to play. This was quickly followed by a penalty and the 3 points gave St George’s a 1 point advantage with under 5 minutes to play.

RBC came back strongly and with 90 seconds remaining George Malaperiman broke through to score what looked to be a decisive try. Lucas hit the post with his conversion attempt to leave Blue Coat with a 19-15 lead.

St George’s rallied with great intensity and, with the last play of the game, had the put in at a scrum on the RBC 10 metre line. However Lucas Dance intercepted the scrum half’s pass and ran the full length of the pitch to score his second try.

The final score of 26-15 suggests a reasonably comfortable day for the U16As, the reality is that it was anything but. The boys deserve great credit for the resilience that was shown by every member of the team.
